Methods that cannot be mocked, legacy code, unstubbed methods, or scenarios where we do need to call the real method, Mockito provides CALLS_REAL_METHODS
. It's a way to create a partial mock object that calls real methods.
If CALLS_REAL_METHODS is not used then un-stubbed methods will use Nice Mock and return null.
package com.example.mokito3.sujan;
public class AppleService {
public String saveApple(String apple) {
String appleString = "i love " + apple + " apple";
System.out.println("appleString = " + appleString);
return appleString;
}
}

@ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class)
public class AppleServiceTest {
@Mock(answer = CALLS_REAL_METHODS)
private AppleService appleService;
@Test
void saveAppleWithStaticMockTest() {
AppleService appleService = mock(AppleService.class, Mockito.CALLS_REAL_METHODS);
String apple = appleService.saveApple("Macintosh");
verify(appleService).saveApple("Macintosh");
assertEquals("i love Macintosh apple", apple);
}
@Test
void saveAppleWithAnnotationMockTest() {
String apple = appleService.saveApple("Macintosh");
verify(appleService).saveApple("Macintosh");
assertEquals("i love Macintosh apple", apple);
}
}

CALLS_REAL_METHODS only
works for methods that are not stubbed, if methods are stubbed then they will return the stubbed response.
Mockito#when has precedence over Mockito#CALLS_REAL_METHODS
